Reading and Phonics
We fundamentally believe that the ability to read transforms lives and changes outcomes for children and communities. We want every child to experience the joy and power of becoming a lifelong reader.
All children have the right to be fluent and confident readers as this helps to unlock the doors to future success, for enjoyment and for academic and professional attainment.
Reading is an essential life skill and our progressive English curriculum develops children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes.
Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as of non-fiction and media texts. Children gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins. It is our intention to ensure that all pupils read widely and confidently with fluency and comprehension appropriate to their age.
Children will be taught phonics throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1 using the Floppy’s Phonics Reading Scheme from the Oxford Reading Tree.
